Big Country
Kennel Offers Gun Dog Training
We offer professional
gun dog training for the wild bird hunter. Most people with
bird dogs do not have the time, knowledge, talent or access to
quail to properly finish a bird dog. Bring your dog to us and
we will return him to you ready to go hunting. No harsh
methods used. Roger Buddin and his son Glen will be the
trainer for your dog.
Happy to announce our
son Glen is now assisting Roger with dog training. Great to
have family involved in our business. Glen was raised with gun
dogs and enjoys them as much as Roger. He will be training dogs
with Roger every day which will help us a lot. Roger has been
training dogs since 1960 and it is something he loves to
do. Experience and patience is the key to his training.
Most dogs accepted
for training are in our program for two to three months. At
the end of the training program you will see your dog in the
field pointing and holding quail and handling for you the
hunter
The first month is spent
on getting to know your dog, introduction to collar, and
handling in the field. Your
dog will be introduced to quail in our Covey Houses.
The second month is spent on the Texas
Covey House and teaching him whoa. Depending on the dog
another month may be needed.
To see the houses that we
use for training go to
http://texascoveyhouse.com . We are currently taking orders on
these houses. They work excellent for training gun dogs and
increasing the number of quail on your lease.
We
accept only 7 dogs a month for training. Dogs are worked at least 5
days a week.
Retrieve training is only
done during the summer months when hot weather prohibits dog work on
birds. Retrieve training usually takes two months.
We welcome dog owners to
come work with us when your dog is close to being ready to come
home. Learn how we handle your dog and what we expect him to
do. We are always ready to answer your questions and give any
assistance you need after your dog has completed our program.
What can you do
to get your dog ready for training
There are several things that you can do that will help us with the
training. It will make the time your dog is in training shorter if
you are able to do any of the following.
-
Teach your dog to come
when called. This can be done with a long rope and plenty of
praise from you.
-
Take your dog out in the
field and get him to come to you without the rope.
Also helps him be acclimated to staying with you in the field.
-
Do not teach your dog to
sit. Dogs that have been taught to sit will often do this in
the field when we are trying to do correction work.
Training Fee: $450.00 per month
(includes feed and
heartworm treatment)
Retrieve Training Fee: $400.00
(Usually takes two
months)
Boarding Fee: $75.00 per month
